‘Raising the Bar’: Calgary to Build Western Canada’s Two Tallest Towers

A pair of ambitious new hotel-residential towers is poised to dramatically reshape Calgary’s skyline. The $1.2-billion real estate project, featuring the JW Marriott Calgary and W Calgary, will include Calgary’s next two tallest skyscrapers, making them among the tallest buildings in Western Canada.

Calgary’s Skyline Reimagined

The two mixed-use towers will rise 69 and 62 storeys high, surpassing the current tallest building, Brookfield Place. Slated to open in 2029 and 2030, the towers will combine over 400 hotel rooms and 360 residential units, just steps from the BMO Centre and Stampede grounds.

A Historic Private Investment

Backed by Truman, Louson Investments Ltd., Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC), and Marriott International, the project represents an unprecedented private investment in downtown Calgary.

“If we want to make something truly special, we have to aim higher,” said Tony Trutina, COO of Truman. “This project isn’t about playing it safe—it’s about creating something Calgary has never seen before.”. “We can’t just do what’s been done before.”

Pending city approvals, construction is expected to begin in 2026.

W Calgary Tower:

  • 157 guest rooms + 27 suites

Calgary’s Hospitality Transformation

The two towers are part of a broader effort to meet growing demand for premium hospitality and residential options in Calgary’s core. The city is currently short 4,500 hotel rooms, with Mayor Jyoti Gondek stating, “Until now, we haven’t had the hotel capacity to support the level of international demand we’re seeing. That changes today.”

Economic Impact

Together with a third hotel project (an Autograph Collection hotel announced in June), the developments will:

  • Add 700+ hotel rooms
  • Create 9,000+ construction jobs and 2,000+ permanent jobs
  • Generate $230 million annually in GDP

Calgary’s Bold New Era

Marriott’s Tim Reardon called the project a major step forward in Calgary’s transformation, saying it will redefine the city’s skyline and hospitality scene.. With luxury and lifestyle offerings under three major hotel brands, the towers signal a new era for Calgary’s real estate, tourism, and business sectors.
