Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has recently called on Canada’s provincial premiers to remove sales taxes on new homes priced under $1 million, following his own commitment to eliminate the federal sales tax on similar properties if he is elected. Poilievre argues that cutting these taxes would significantly lower the cost of homeownership and help address the housing crisis by encouraging more construction.
A Plan to Make Homes More Affordable
According to the Conservatives, eliminating the federal GST on new homes under $1 million could reduce the cost of an $800,000 home by up to $40,000. This measure, Poilievre says, could also lead to the construction of 30,000 additional homes annually, easing the current housing shortage. In his letter to the premiers, Poilievre emphasized that provincial sales taxes add a considerable burden to home prices, urging them to match his proposed federal tax cut.
An Alternative Funding Approach
To finance this tax cut, Poilievre has pledged to scrap several Liberal housing policies that he claims are ineffective. He argues that Canadians would save tens of thousands on new home purchases if both federal and provincial sales taxes were removed.
Ongoing Debate on Housing Affordability
Poilievre’s proposal is the latest move in his ongoing critique of the Liberal government’s handling of the housing market. He attributes rising housing prices and rents to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s policies since 2015, asserting that the current government has made homeownership increasingly out of reach for Canadians.
