Following Donald Trump’s re-election, Americans are once again searching for ways to relocate north, with Google reporting a significant surge in searches for “move to Canada.” According to Google Trends, the interest in moving to Canada started rising on election night and reached its peak around 6 a.m. on Wednesday as Americans woke up to the news.
Which States Are Most Interested in Moving to Canada?
Search interest was highest in states like Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Minnesota—regions where Kamala Harris received strong support. These states saw a particularly sharp increase in queries such as “how to immigrate to Canada from U.S.” and “best places to live in Canada.” Other related searches included “how to get a visa for Canada” and “Zillow in Canada,” as many Americans began exploring Canadian housing options.
Other Countries See Interest as Well
Canada wasn’t the only country on Americans’ radar. Google Trends also showed increased interest in moving to countries like Australia, Switzerland, Denmark, and Norway. However, Canada remained the top destination for U.S. users, with searches directing people primarily to the official Canadian immigration website, Canada.ca.
Canada’s Preparedness for Traffic Surges
Given the recurring spikes in U.S. interest following contentious elections, Canada has been preparing its online systems for increased demand. A spokesperson for Employment and Social Development Canada noted that the government website, Canada.ca, is designed to “automatically scale on demand” to handle high levels of traffic, ensuring that users have uninterrupted access to immigration information.
A Historic Win and Tougher Immigration Policies
Trump’s win marks him as the first president in over 100 years to secure a non-consecutive term, winning both the electoral college and 50.9% of the popular vote. His campaign promises included a stricter stance on immigration and border security, raising concerns among some Americans about the future of U.S. policies. Meanwhile, Canada recently announced plans to scale back its immigrant intake, a shift from its more open policies in recent years, potentially making it more challenging for Americans seeking to move.
