Ontario Landlord Charges $500 for Tent Space Amid Housing Crisis

In Ontario, a rental advertisement has caused a stir by offering tent spaces for $500 on private property, highlighting the severe housing affordability issues in the area. The ad, which was quickly removed from Kijiji, targeted individuals living in makeshift tent communities and offered a spot on a private cottage property in Innisfil, near Barrie.

The listing, titled “HELP for people in Homeless Tent encampment Private Property,” promised amenities such as electricity, bathroom access, a shared kitchen, and even job opportunities. Although the ad has been taken down, it still appears in Google search results and has been widely criticized.

Critics have slammed the concept of a “private encampment” for profit, especially in the context of the Greater Toronto Area’s (GTA) worsening housing crisis. The situation was further complicated when it was revealed that staff from local MPP Andrea Khanjin’s office had mistakenly directed people seeking shelter to this property.

On social media, the response ranged from shock to anger, with many decrying the exploitation of vulnerable individuals looking for affordable housing. A local housing justice advocate suggested that while the property owner’s intentions might have been good, the terms of the offer were highly exploitative.

This incident has underscored the critical need for effective and humane solutions to Ontario’s housing crisis and has sparked a broader discussion about how to address homelessness and housing insecurity.
