Toronto police have successfully apprehended a 26-year-old woman, Lariza Resendez Lopes, linked to a rental scam that preyed on individuals seeking apartments in the city. Operating under the guise of TorontoRental.org and LRLManagement, Lopes allegedly advertised rental properties on various online platforms from June to August 2023.
Victims of the scam reported providing deposits for the advertised apartments, only to be informed later that the properties were no longer available for rent. Further investigation revealed that Lopes was not authorized to offer these apartments for rent, leading to suspicions of fraudulent activity.
The breakthrough came last week when Toronto police identified and released a photo of Lariza Resendez Lopes in an effort to locate her. Following this, an update from the authorities on Tuesday confirmed her arrest. Lopes now faces eight counts of fraud under $5,000 and eight counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, reflecting the serious nature of her alleged crimes.
Scheduled for a court appearance on May 6, 2024, the case against Lopes highlights the ongoing issues within the rental market in Toronto and serves as a reminder for potential renters to exercise caution. Toronto police continue their efforts to combat rental fraud, ensuring that the city remains a safe place for residents to find their homes.
