However, the construction of this laneway house faced significant opposition from some local residents.

During 2021, signs opposing the laneway house project appeared on utility poles in the surrounding neighborhood. These signs displayed slogans such as “Armadale NOT Condodale!” and aimed to gather support through a change.org petition. The opposition argued that the construction of a small laneway home would supposedly “destroy and degrade our charming, historic community beyond recognition.”

In contrast, a counter-petition emerged in support of the development, urging the City’s Committee of Adjustment to approve the necessary variance. Eventually, a revised version of the proposal was accepted, but discontent among certain residents persists.

It is important to consider that the monthly rate of $2,450 for this laneway unit only slightly exceeds the average rent of a one-bedroom apartment in Toronto, which stands at $2,418 as of June 2023 according to rentals.ca.
