The government of Ontario, under the leadership of Premier Doug Ford, has outlined a comprehensive plan to split Peel Region into three separate municipalities. The proposed legislation, tabled on Thursday, initiates the process of establishing Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon as independent cities and towns.

The government aims to complete the dissolution process by January 1, 2025, as stated by Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs Steve Clark during his presentation at Queen’s Park on Thursday afternoon. The primary objective of the government’s plan is to empower municipal partners and enable them to fulfill their commitments to the people of Ontario, particularly in addressing the pressing housing supply crisis.

Peel Region encompasses some of the largest and fastest-growing municipalities in Canada, making it a focal point for significant growth in the coming years. The government intends to support this growth by streamlining administrative processes, enhancing operational efficiency, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality local services that residents of Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon rightfully expect.

The proposed legislation has received support from the three lower-tier municipalities directly affected by the region’s dissolution. This restructuring is viewed as a strategic move that will better position each municipality for future growth and development.

If passed, the new bill aims to provide stability and fairness throughout the dissolution process. It emphasizes respect for taxpayers’ interests, optimal value for public expenditure, and uninterrupted continuity of front-line services and employment.

Currently, Peel Region assumes responsibility for services such as paramedics, health programs, and recycling in the lower-tier municipalities. The proposed legislation intends to establish regulatory authority and form a transition board that will oversee the dissolution process, ensuring fairness and balance throughout.
